Effigy

You couldn’t shake it
How deeply you cut me
The pain that echos through me resounds in you

And I can’t take it
Another day without you
Nothing but shadows to remind me who
Used to fill the room

So I’ll climb the hill
Lay down my weaponry
Fire up the still
And drink to your effigy
It will not kill you
It will only hurt me
I took that ocean as a lover too quickly
That bird on my shoulder couldn’t grip me
It was not mine, it did not want me

You couldn’t stand it
The thought of running into me
So you put a country in between for length and breadth

I can’t stand this suffocating space to breathe
The distance closes in on me
Until all that’s left
Is the space we used to fit

So I’ll climb the hill
Lay down my weaponry
Fire up the still
And drink to your effigy
It will not kill you
It will only hurt me
I took that ocean as a lover too quickly
That bird on my shoulder couldn’t grip me
It was not mine, it did not want me
It was not mine, it did not want me
It was not mine

Why do you think it is that it takes its time?
For the pain to ebb like the tide
For the smoke to rise
For the fire to die down
Lie down with me one last time before you leave
Before you take flight and take to sea
For the spirits to leave me dry
Now, remind me how
You were not mine
You were not mine
You were not mine

You were not mine, you did not want me
You were not mine, you did not want me

She was not mine, she did not want me
