Debt

I wrote this song in early August and recorded it with my cousin when I was up in Mass. It’s one of a few “quilt songs” I’ve written, where I have song scraps that I like that didn’t work out in other songs that I sew together in a song. This version is a little rough, so I debated whether or not to put it up here. But I just can’t stop listening to it, and I hope you like it too.

My hands are too soft to build you anything that’s not made out of sand
But I built you a palace by the ocean and made you sultan
Follow me to the willow tree
To the one where the boughs hang low
Where they touch the ground, where the ground is bare, where the trunk is hollow
Where the boughs bend low in sorrow, come follow.

We are barely breathing breath
We are finally alone at last
I am in debt
Love hasn’t let me down yet

She said, “It was a long time coming”.
I bet she doesn’t believe that
But I can only trust my demons
They are my most consistent feelings

Beneath the trees
Your heart beating against mine
The birds and bees are making shadows and keeping time
We believe in something we cannot see with our eyes
But we’re gonna make it shine

Would you follow me down that rabbit hole?
Even if the rabbit knew no time?
I shrunk so low I could not call out
I could not hear your voice, you grew to such a height

But beneath these boughs we’re made anew
Because we’re bound to wake up soon
And I knew it was all dream but it didn’t seem to bother you.

Beneath these boughs I waver
You catch your breath
I ask you the only thing I don’t know the answer to yet
I usually know everything you’re gonna say before you say it
But you seem speechless…

I am barely breathing breath
You are finally saying yes
I am in debt
Love hasn’t let me down yet
